TRADITIONAL CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY
A Lunar New Year Tradition
(and why it still matters)
Chinese calligraphy is a centuries-old art form, valued not only for its visual beauty but for the intention, meaning, and symbolism held within every brushstroke. Rooted in Chinese culture, it uses Chinese characters to express wishes for prosperity, harmony, renewal, and good fortune. Each piece is created with care and balance, reflecting both artistic skill and a deep respect for tradition.
While Lunar New Year is celebrated across many East and Southeast Asian cultures, the calligraphy commonly displayed during the holiday, including spring couplets and fortune characters, originates from Chinese calligraphic traditions. Over generations, these written blessings have been shared, adapted, and widely appreciated throughout the region, becoming an integral part of how the new year is welcomed.
During Lunar New Year, Chinese calligraphy takes on a particularly meaningful role. Homes, storefronts, and gathering spaces are refreshed with auspicious words written on red paper, symbolizing a fresh start and an invitation for positive energy in the year ahead. Today, this tradition continues as a thoughtful way to celebrate the season, through decoration, gifting, and moments of quiet intention.
The Significance of the Red Paper
Why red? In Chinese culture, red symbolizes vital energy, happiness, and protection. During the Lunar New Year, the streets and homes of the city come alive with red calligraphy. Traditionally, the "Nian" monster was said to be afraid of the colour red; and today, it serves as a vibrant reminder of prosperity and the coming of Spring.
Common Uses of Lunar New Year Calligraphy
When you commission Lunar New Year calligraphy, it’s important to know which format suits your event and space. Each shape has a specific traditional placement:
Spring Couplets (春联 - chūn lián)
Spring couplets are long, vertical strips of calligraphy traditionally placed on either side of a doorway. These couplets express wishes for prosperity, health, happiness, and success in the coming year.
Placement:
- One vertical strip on each side of the front door
- Often paired with a horizontal banner above the doorway
Horizontal Banner (横批 - héng pī)
The horizontal banner is placed above the door and ties the couplet together with a short phrase such as “Welcoming Spring” or “Blessings Enter the Home.”
Placement:
- Centered above the door frame
Square Diamond (斗方 - dǒu fāng)
Square calligraphy pieces typically feature a single, powerful character written boldly in the centre. These are some of the most recognizable Lunar New Year decorations.
Placement:
- On the front door or entryway
- On walls, mirrors, windows, or within the home
A well-known tradition is hanging the character 福 (fú) upside down, symbolizing that good fortune has “arrived.”
Kitchen and Home Blessings
Characters representing abundance and fullness (滿/满 (mǎn) are often placed in kitchens, pantries, or dining areas as a wish for plentiful food and comfort throughout the year. For example, 滿/满 (mǎn) on a rice bin or even the refrigerator, as a wish for plentiful food in the coming year.
